Are the hearts big enough to write on? What size are the hearts?
Yes they are big enough to write on. They are 1 1/2" (L) x 1 1/8" (H)
Can this be opened up once the hearts are inside? in case one gets dropped in backwards.
The Dropbox Guest book acts the same as a picture frame where the back is removable. This allows you to select and place your background of choice, as well as adjust the wooden hearts as needed.
What type of pen do you need to write on the hearts?
Ballpoint and gel pens are most recommended to prevent the ink from spreading within the wood grain.

Such a lovely piece! I kept wondering why I couldn't select the color background, but it actually comes with three paper inserts: navy, white and pink gradient. You disassemble the frame and remove the protective films from the acrylic, stick the engraved wood onto the inside acrylic, lay it face down on the inside with the backdrop of your choice on top, put the frame backing in place and lock it. All done within two minutes and back in the box to wait for its debut at my wedding. I was a bit sad to realize there wouldn't be a stand, but it can be hung. The front of the frame had a couple scratches since it was missing the protective film so I knocked down a star on the review.
